Even as a child, Cuyahoga Falls resident Kirk Hiner said he liked writing.
"I am constantly writing," Hiner said. "As kids, my brother and I would write short stories and scripts based on Star Wars. I was a big fan of the first two movies as a kid."
Hiner will get to see his writing come to life in August when his play Spoon Millionaires, is performed for the first time as part of Playfair 2006, the annual event at the Lima Civic Center in Lima, Ohio. It will be directed by George Frazee.
Spoon Millionaires centers around the impending fall of the Witherspoon family and their record company, Spoon Records, Hiner said. Facing financial ruin, the Archduke Witherspoon hatches a desperate scheme involving a stolen tape and a Paul McCartney look-alike.
"A friend of mine in high school and I tried to write this as a novel, Congruent Love Triangles," Hiner said. "We did three chapters before abandoning it. In college, when I was faced with an upcoming comedy troupe show and only half my actors available to me, I decided to abandon the sketch format, write a full-length play and bring in a new cast. I took a few jokes and a few plot elements from Congruent Love Triangles and wrote a fairly decent play."
Several years, rewrites and name changes later, Hiner and co-author Jim Jividen sent the script to Playfair, where it was accepted.
Hiner compared Spoon Millionaires to the upcoming movie Snakes on a Plane, without the snakes and without the plane.
"There is something in this play for just about everyone," he said.
Hiner lives with is wife, Tieraney, and their two children. He works as a web production manager at Dynamics Online, Inc. in Beachwood, and also writes Macintosh-related articles for www.applelinks.com.
Spoon Millionaires will play Aug. 10 through 12, and 17 through 19. Thursday and Saturday shows will start at 8:00 p.m., and Friday shows will feature a dinner at 6:30 p.m. before the performance.
